This article is a little old, but having lived here for 5+ years, it still rings true. Not to say Philly is without it’s own problems, but here for positive news!
Been focused on food (cooking) experiments and music projects - taking a break from engineering stuff as I get plenty of that from work. What’v’e you been up to?
Nice, make anything tasty lately?
Redux was, in short, amazing and rejuvenating. Didn’t get much sleep, but I feel better about my job after redux because my manager and I have been trying harder to be communicative.
This last week though has been a little rough. My roommates and I are all moving out of our current house and the landlord is trying to keep our security deposit and demanding that we pay an insane amount because he claims we didn’t communicate through proper channels. Besides that things are going well!
A few Fellows and I also started a group chat where we send voice memos to each other as updates; easier than texting and faster than texting (plus we can practice our podcast voices). That’s been pretty fun! (If you’re interested, shoot me a text)
In other news, excited for new Baltimore fellows to join us!
Missing all 2018ers terribly and hoping to aggressively visit VFA cities in the upcoming year.
Sorry to hear about all the housing issues, really some of the most stressful & unnecessary issues always seem to arise from that realm of our lives eh?
Really neat idea on the voice chat memos - how does that work? Via SMS, FB, WhatsApp?
Wasn’t there another platform you were using Dylan? cough Yes Sean! its anchor.fm
prose-ing all my notes from three interviews into #content for our first newsletter push. trying not to think about how unlikely it will be read by those who receive it because email is outdated lskdjflskjdas
journaling a lot! got a fun new planner from mochithings.com (jamey, if you’re here, this is the site) so trying to use it as much as possible in a productive way. also continuing to promote my foster pup so he’ll get adopted and i can sleep past 6:30am
Journaling is so much fun! More artform than anything! And I wouldnt discount email for being old, after excel, it’s probs the most used business software ever. More users than Facebook lol
This week will be getting back into the normal scheduling for me. Amazon also decided to force an update to our infrastructure by Aug 4th, so dealing with that as a team.
I leave for Maine next Thursday, anyone been to Acadia National Park? Also gonna promote vfanews.club, and try and teach a friend some basic coding tmrw. Trying to process Redux still too <3
acadia is beautiful!! i was there for a total of maybe 15 hours lol so i don’t remember a ton. the boyf and i road tripped to maine from nj on some break and what i remember the most is driving around the park and getting sick views. also him complaining that mountains on the east coast aren’t real mountains compared to the west coast .-. lol
The last few weeks have been brutal for my personal life: I’ve been sick for 3 weeks, a 2015er I became close with moved away, work has been culturally very disappointing (and low key hostile), I haven’t exercised, and I haven’t been social.
But that’s all changing! Working on a few cool things this week:
Redux is around the corner and that’s what is keeping me going at this point. Excited to see everyone!
Sorry to hear about the rough few weeks, glad to hear things are looking up. Interested in item #3 here - what kind of project/medium are you working on?
Just got back from a nice week vacation at the beach, feeling pretty fresh, but really need to gather my thoughts/make a plan (esp. since it’s a short week).
Been working a lot on my DnD character for an upcoming campaign, he’s a druid, who is a cross btwn Treebeard from Lord of the Rings and Steve Irwin (which I think will be a lot of fun to play). Project wise, not sure what I want to focus on atm, maybe my blogging/ethnography/writing. Like I said above, feeling super disorganized atm, so need to do some mind-mapping or something to get my thoughts in order.
Working on redesigning one of our core products and getting back into the groove. We also have our monthly town hall esque meeting, so need to prepare for that.
At Work, mostly getting a reskin of a current product further along.
At Home, I’m doing a lot of stuff around getting organized again - I get in this mood at least once a year of wanting to “find an optimal system” for myself, which is some kind of sisyphis-like task apparently…. Project wise, getting back into checklisting and a project for Code for Philly, and attempting to post something on my blog this week.
Recently launched a podcast in collaboration with a non-profit in Philly that enables people experiencing homelessness to pursue micro-entrepreneurship. The podcast narrates the homeless experience in Philly with the goal of shedding light on what life is like in that situation. The first two episodes are out now! Please subscribe if you like it. Any proceeds from sponsorship would go to the organization.
Awesome work! I don’t see a way to subscribe directly on that page, do you have a link? I also found some of their magazines at https://www.osaphilly.org/the-magazine/#past-papers if anyone wants to check it out too.
You need to choose your preferred platform from that link, eg Apple, google, etc. then subscribe from there
I feel like I’ve been seeing more and more about this checklisting phenomenon in professional settings. Interested to see where it goes.
Have you connected with Martin? He was asking some questions about the furniture market on the SHS groupme - might also be interested in the research phase!
Also, do you have any early hypotheses or observations?
Also, very happy to add tags if the right tag doesn’t currently exist - still figuring things out!
Stil stuck in my head from a great movie: Post Malone, Swae Lee - Sunflower.
Also, the girl next door - ON TOP has been on repeat for me for a while, using youtube-repeater. (I’m told the visuals for that one are from an awesome anime…)
Thought this was a super cool way to describe city identity to some extent, had a lot of fun looking at all the little tiny city projects :)
